The interactions between T cell receptors (TCR) and MHC molecules are critical for antigen-recognition in the immune response. Current studies include an analysis of TCR Vb genetic polymorphisms and their associations with specific disease subtypes in patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). This is combined with the identification of clonally expanded TCRs found in the synovial samples from JRA patients. The characterization of these T cells will increase our understanding of the immunologic mechanisms responsible for this autoimmune disease.
